BMW Crossover

So what is a 'crossover' anyway? And what makes it different from an SUV? Well, the book says a crossover is built on a car chassis while an SUV is built on a truck chassis - although that's not strictly true; there are plenty of vehicles out there that people call SUV's but are actually crossovers.

For practical purposes, then, let's look at it this way: a crossover is a station wagon with more headroom and a better view out the windshield… or an SUV with a little less heft, a lot more style and performance and better fuel economy.

A little crossover history lesson: the history books say that the first crossover was probably the Willys-Overland Jeepster back in 1947. And you could make the case that the AMC Eagle , introduced in 1979 was the next evolutionary step. But everyone agrees that the modern crossover was pioneered by the BMW X6 .

Practically every manufacturer these days offers at least one crossover, but BMW is still the leader in the field with the X1(a), X4(b) and X6(c). Each one is a bit bigger and more powerful than the next, but given that every BMW is an 'Ultimate Driving Machine,' it's hardly surprising that they are #1, #2 and #3 on the Kelly Blue Book list of the top-10 2016 crossovers . And #4 is the BMW X6 M(d), the 567-horsepower monster in the lineup.

Also not surprisingly, all of them are rated 10.0 out of 10 by the KBB consumer survey.
(a) X1 / twin turbo. 2.0-liter, 4 cylinder, 228 hp / 22/32 mpg city/highway / Surveyrating 10.0
(b) X4 / turbo 3.0 liter, 6-cylinder, 300 hp / 19/27 mpg city/highway / Surveyrating 10.0
(c) X6 / twin turbo, 4.4-liter V-8, 300 hp / 15/21 mpg city/highway / Surveyrating 10.0
(d) X6 M / twin turbo 4.4 liter V-8, 567 hp/ 14/19 mpg city/highway / Surveyrating 10.0

So, if you want something bigger than a station wagon (although it should be said that the BMW 3-Series sport wagon is a stylish, terrific car), but more stylish than an SUV (although it should be said that the BMW X5 SUV is the one of the most popular and best-selling SUV's on the market today), then stop by Braman BMW West Palm Beach for a test drive and they'll be happy to help you figure out just how far over you want to cross.
